Test of Fundamental Symmetries in Meson Decays with WASA-at-COSY
Bachelor, Master, and doctoral theses are available at the WASA-at-COSY experiment facility at the Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich.
The Wide Angle Shower Apparatus WASA is a large-acceptance detector for charged and neutral particles operated at the COSY proton and deuteron accelerator. The experiments aim at a complete measurement of the final state particles from proton-proton and proton-deuteron collisions. The physics goals comprise tests of fundamental symmetries, such as C, P, T and combinations thereof, search for physics beyond the Standard Model as well as precision studies of strongly interacting particles.
The experimental approach requires the usage, maintenance, and improvement of the experiment from detector components, via trigger and readout electronics, to the data analysis and simulation calculations, and finally the physics interpretation of the results. WASA-at-COSY is an international collaboration and offers the experience of team work including the strong student body and participation in the experiment beam times.
Current experiments with WASA-at-COSY study production and decay modes of light mesons, especially pi, eta, eta' and omega mesons.
Doctoral thesis topics:
- Data analysis and physics interpretation with dedicated software based on the C++ and ROOT packages.
Bachelor and Master thesis topics:
- Test of detector and trigger prototypes for an experiment upgrade.
- Calibration and monitoring of detector components using a C++/ROOT based analysis program.
- Monte Carlo simulations modeling physics reactions for the interpretation of the acquired data.
